My New Best Vitamix!

It's hard to believe that for as long as I have been making healthy foods and smoothies, I never made the investment in a Vitamix!  It was just always one of those items that I found to be so expensive that I just couldn't justify the purchase.  Isn't it interesting what we will spend money on?  So often, I see clients who are willing to spend lots of money on things much less important than their health and in this regard, I was doing the same.  I just couldn't come to terms with the cost.  I finally made the purchase last December when a store was liquidizing so I got it at a discounted rate which was fabulous!  But can you believe it's taken me till now to open the box?  I think I felt guilty for purchasing it and somehow it sitting in the box in my office, meant I hadn't spent the money!

Well un-boxing day finally came yesterday!   And I"m happy to say that it was a more than worth while investment!

It made me the smoothest, creamiest smoothie ever and it was surprisingly easy to clean!  To be clear, it has an actually cleaning feature, genius!

I was finally ready to use my Vitamix because since making changes to my routine almost 16 weeks ago, buying smoothies at stores is not as easy as it once was.  I have been tracking everything that I eat so that I can be sure I am getting the right amount of carbs to proteins to fats and calories in my diet.  Some people think that sounds overwhelming but it has been like a little game for me and I have quite enjoyed it!  I think the real enjoyment came from seeing the results that tracking has made.  And thanks to the My Fitness Pal app on my phone, tracking was always at my fingertips and done with basic ease.  In order to get really fine tuned results, I needed to really fine tune what I was putting in my body.  And although I had always been eating really healthful foods, some of them were high in calorie, carb and fat content so I needed to tweak things to get the results that I was looking for.  But in the process, my smoothies had to go by the wayside because knowing what content a store was putting into my drink wasn't always possible and I have really started to miss that part of my lifestyle.  Enter my new best Vitamix!

I wanted to share this yummy recipe with you all because I know how much we all love our healthy smoothies and as always, I love knowing exactly what I put into mine and now you can too!

One of the mistakes that I often see people making is that they don't treat smoothies as a meal.  They will often have a smoothie as a snack and wonder why they're putting on weight.  Well it's the simple science of numbers.  As you can see above, this smoothie is packing a solid 360 calories!  A snack is certainly not 360 calories, this is close to a meal!  It's actually what I had for dinner last night because I had already had a big salmon salad for lunch and I just wasn't in the mood for another big meal.  And had I not added the whey protein in, this would have just been a carb, sugar and fat heavy meal with no fat burning protein included.  I also suggest investing in some monk fruit powder and using that as an alternative to honey.  This is a much lower carb option and is a great option even for diabetics as monk fruit does not affect your blood sugar levels the same way that honey can.

Even too much of a good thing, can be a bad thing!

So I challenge you to really pay attention when enjoying smoothies.  We need to understand how what we put into our body is going to affect us, even if they are seemingly harmless whole foods.

It's not that we can't have smoothies but we need to be clear on how they affect our overall nutrition content for the day.  For me for instance, I only take in about 105g of carb per day.  So seeing that this took up 62g of my carb intake for the day is ok as long as I adjust the rest of my day to accommodate it.  As I play with my new Vitamix, I will be sure to create some healthful recipes for you all and if you're interested in what protein I use, fill out the Join Thara link on my page or shoot me an email at

Don't let your #SmoothieLife undo all of your hard work while quietly packing the pounds on.  I hope you make and enjoy this yummy smoothie! Let me know how it comes out!
